The Guyana Stock Exchange opened for business in 2003. It began trading activities with 12 companies from its secondary list on June 30, 2003. The official entity responsible for organizing and supervising the Guyanese exchange is the Guyana Association of Securities Companies and Intermediaries (GASCI), which is a self-regulatory organisation registered with the Guyana Securities Council (GSC) to carry on business as a stock exchange as well as an association of securities companies and intermediaries.
GASCI is comprised of four member firms who can trade on the exchange. They are the Trust Company (Guyana) Ltd, Guyana Americas Merchant Bank, Beharry Stockbrokers Ltd and Hand-in-Hand Trust Corporation (formerly GNCB Trust Corporation). Trust Company (Guyana) Ltd, Beharry Stockbrokers Ltd and Hand-in-Hand Trust Corporation are also represented on the Board of Directors of GASCI. The member firms of GASCI are registered as brokers with the Guyana Securities Council.
