The Colombia Stock Exchange (BVC) began in 2001 through the merger of the Bogotá, Medellín and Occidente stock exchanges. The BVC included all the brokerage firms registered under the former exchanges and operates as their national stock exchange.

In addition to equities, the BVC trades corporate bonds, Government bonds and derivatives.

The National Agricultural Exchange (BNA) was established in 1979 for the promotion and regulation of agricultural commodities in Colombia. Following droughts in 1991-1992, internal violence, excessive subsidies and other global agricultural issues, the BNA made internal adjustments for the long-term sustainability of the exchange.

In 2010, the exchange was renamed the Columbia Mercantile Exchange (BMC). In addition, other agricultural and non-agricultural commodities were added to the exchange for trading.
